Mafutseni – What began as a disagreement over a missing E200 note ended in a near-fatal assault that saw a 31-year-old man dragged across a tarmac and thrown off an overhead bridge.
Police have arrested and charged two suspects, both aged 36 and from the Mahlabane area, in connection with the brutal attack. The pair is scheduled to appear in court today to answer to charges of attempted murder following their arrest on May 4.
The incident occurred near Mzimpofu late on the night of April 28, 2026. According to police reports, the victim was walking to a local drinking spot with acquaintances when one of them handed him E200 for safekeeping. When the money was requested later that evening, the victim reportedly searched his pockets and claimed he had already handed the cash to another person in the group.
The explanation sparked a violent confrontation. The victim was allegedly assaulted with fists, kicks, and sticks. The attack escalated when the assailants dragged the man across the tarmac and ultimately threw him off the Mzimpofu overhead bridge.
The 31-year-old suffered multiple severe injuries across his body and is currently undergoing treatment at a medical institution.
While two suspects are now in custody, investigators are still looking into the involvement of a third person allegedly present during the assault.
