Manzini- The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, has called for increased ownership and participation of Emaswati in the country’s business sector, stressing that local empowerment is key to building a resilient economy.
Speaking during the official launch of Right Value Grocer under Linac Group at Kakhoza, Khumalo highlighted that while Eswatini remains open to investment, there is a need to ensure that more local citizens take a leading role in owning and operating businesses across various sectors.
“We want to see Emaswati actively participating in the economy, not just as consumers but as business owners,” he said.
The minister acknowledged that the current business environment is challenging, noting that many enterprises are grappling with low customer numbers and tight profit margins. However, he emphasised that strengthening local ownership could help address some of these challenges by keeping wealth within communities and stimulating domestic economic activity.
Khumalo further pointed to ongoing government efforts to create a more enabling environment for local entrepreneurs. These include reviewing regulations and policies to make it easier for Emaswati to enter and compete in the market.
He also indicated that some legislative measures aimed at regulating business operations are being considered and may be tabled in Parliament, with the goal of ensuring fair participation and protecting local interests.
The minister encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to take advantage of available opportunities, particularly in sectors such as retail and manufacturing, which continue to show growth potential despite economic pressures.
“Empowering Emaswati to own and run businesses is critical for job creation, economic inclusion, and long-term sustainability,” he said.
