A 23 year old woman from Nkoyoyo has been remanded in custody after appearing before the Pigg’s Peak Magistrate Court on 15 April 2026, charged with attempted murder.

Buhleni Police formally charged the woman in connection with an incident that occurred on 10 April 2026 at approximately 6am at the Matfuntini area, where she allegedly gave birth behind a house and then dumped her newborn baby girl inside a pit latrine.

The baby was found alive after an eight year old boy discovered her while going to use the toilet. The newborn was retrieved from the pit latrine following the discovery.

The woman had been admitted to hospital for medical treatment after the incident and was only charged on Wednesday once she had recovered sufficiently to appear in court.
