NOKWANE – His Majesty King Mswati III has commended the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) for its role in safeguarding the Kingdom, describing the military as the first and last line of defence in protecting Eswatini’s peace and stability.
The King made the remarks during the 53rd Army Day celebrations held at the Nokwane Defence Headquarters, where soldiers, senior government officials and defence leadership gathered to mark the annual event.
His Majesty expressed appreciation for the discipline, courage and selfless service demonstrated by members of the armed forces, noting that their role remains central to national stability.
“The Army Day serves as a powerful reminder of the heroes who stand as our first and last line of defence at our borderlines,” said the King.
“Your commitment remains singular: keeping Eswatini safe. To serve the nation is to be the shield that guards the peace.”
He noted that modern security threats require constant adaptation, saying the nature of challenges facing soldiers has evolved beyond traditional warfare.
“We must recognise that the nature of our enemies has evolved… a soldier today must stand not only against physical aggression, but also against instability, lawlessness and national division,” he said.
His Majesty added that technology alone cannot replace human presence in safeguarding the nation.
“Technology can never replace the human spirit. ‘Boots on the ground’ remain the most vital component of peacekeeping and national security.”
He urged members of the force to uphold discipline and loyalty in their daily duties.
“Selfless service, loyalty and discipline must remain the pillars you embrace daily,” the King said.
“The nation stands firmly behind you… your bravery is the standard we require. Always remain vigilant and selfless in your call of duty and service to the nation.”
The Army Day celebrations also saw a series of promotions within the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force in recognition of service and commitment.
Those promoted to Lieutenant General from Major General are Ncanawe Dlamini and Collen Lasco.
Promoted to Major General from Brigadier General are Thabo Luhlanga, Sotja Dlamini and Chimpa Shongwe.
Those elevated to Brigadier General from Colonel include David Magongo, currently on foreign service, Hoppy Vilakati and Phahlane Dlamini.
