Mbabane– Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg says the 2026/2027 national budget is expected to create employment and business opportunities across several sectors, including tourism, construction and agriculture.
Speaking during the weekly Finance in Focus programme, Rijkenberg highlighted that the opening of the International Conference Centre later this month would play a key role in boosting economic activity. He said the facility was likely to attract regional and continental meetings, which could increase demand for accommodation and related services.
According to the minister, the anticipated rise in conferences would create opportunities for hotels, guesthouses, and short-term rental businesses. He added that even households with extra rooms could benefit from hosting visitors.
Rijkenberg also pointed to expected employment opportunities linked to the reopening of major hospitality facilities, including the Royal Swazi, alongside the operations of the ICC.
In addition, the minister said the budget prioritises infrastructure development, particularly road construction. He noted that several local contractors had already secured tenders for the construction of double-sealed roads, while a major road project stretching about 110 kilometres is also underway.
He explained that road development often leads to the emergence of small businesses such as markets and service stations, while also increasing employment in construction.
The agriculture sector is also set to benefit, with significant funding allocated towards youth-driven projects. Rijkenberg said unused land across the country presented an opportunity to address unemployment through alternative and profitable farming methods.
“These projects will largely be implemented through E-Wade, and there is potential for thousands of opportunities, especially for young people, women and persons with disabilities,” he said.
He added that increased funding to community development initiatives would further support job creation, particularly in rural areas.
