Tehran – The United States has offered Iran a new negotiating team, suggesting Vice President JD Vance replace special envoy Steve Witkoff, according to Iranian officials cited by Fars news agency on Tuesday.
An Iranian official said the proposal reflects US worries about a possible jump in energy prices amid ongoing tensions. “US President Donald Trump is clearly seeking a meeting and a deal. The latest US proposals include removing Witkoff over his loyalty to the circle of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and engaging with Vance for a serious dialogue in response to demands put forward by the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the official stated.
Trump told Axios on April 5 that a deal with Tehran could be reached by April 7. He had initially warned on April 6 that Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on its energy and civilian infrastructure. The president later extended the deadline to 8:00 p.m. EST on April 7, equivalent to 3:00 a.m. Moscow time on April 8.
