LAVUMISA- Lavumisa-born singer Mathando, music is more than just melody, it is therapy, testimony and truth.
Born Thandokuhle Dlamini in 2002, the Afro music artist has used her voice to tell stories that many are afraid to share. Over the past three years, she has quietly carved her space in Eswatini’s music scene, not through hype, but through heartfelt storytelling rooted in personal experience.
Her latest single, “Buy’ Ekhaya,” takes a deeply emotional direction, confronting the painful reality of growing up without a parent. Rather than simply creating another love song, Mathando chooses vulnerability, opening up conversations around grief, depression, anxiety and the silent struggles many young people endure.
“This song is inspired by real-life experiences,” she explains. “Losing a parent or growing up without one creates a void that is difficult to fill. I wanted to speak to that pain.”
The track features rising artist Athandwa and was produced by Kinga Kangaroo at Swazi Swag Records, where he handled the beat, mixing and mastering. Accompanied by an official music video directed and edited by MayD, the project presents a visual narrative that strengthens the song’s emotional depth. The video is available on YouTube.
While the message behind “Buy’ Ekhaya” is heavy, Mathando’s journey itself reflects resilience. She recalls performing at major city events hosted by MTN, where she showcased songs such as “Emathandweni” to wider audiences, moments that affirmed her calling despite the industry’s challenges.
“Music makes me happy,” she says. “Even when it gets tough, I encourage myself. It takes strength to keep moving forward.”
Encouragement, and sometimes pressure, from friends and family has fueled her determination. Through setbacks and sacrifices, she continues refining her craft, urging supporters to rally behind the new release.
Beyond promoting her single, Mathando also shares a message to aspiring artists: face challenges with courage, embrace uncertainty and trust your inner strength.
As she pushes forward, “Buy’ Ekhaya” stands not just as a song, but as a reminder that pain can be transformed into purpose, and that sometimes the most powerful music is born from the deepest wounds.
