The Kingdom of Lesotho and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia are advancing a renewed programme of bilateral cooperation aimed at accelerating sustainable development and regional integration across Africa.
According to Lesotho’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, the partnership builds on a 2012 bilateral agreement that established a broad framework for collaboration in several strategic sectors. Officials say both countries are now moving to activate that framework through practical initiatives aligned with continental development priorities.
Priority areas identified include water resource management, agriculture and food security, aviation, and health and nutrition. Lesotho brings experience in integrated water management and transboundary water governance, while Ethiopia offers expertise in agricultural productivity, aviation infrastructure, and public health systems. The exchange is expected to support skills transfer, institutional strengthening, and technological cooperation.
Momentum for the renewed engagement gathered during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in February 2026. Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Timothewos met with Lesotho’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Lejone Mpotjoane, where both sides reaffirmed their intention to turn the 2012 accord into concrete programmes supported by regular consultations and sector specific mechanisms.
Lesotho’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ntsiuoa Sekete, said the strengthened ties are expected to deliver measurable benefits across multiple sectors.
“As both nations look ahead, Lesotho Ethiopia relations are poised to translate political goodwill into tangible outcomes enhancing food systems resilience, strengthening air connectivity, improving health and nutrition outcomes, and stewarding water resources for inclusive and sustainable growth,” says H.E Ntsiuoa Sekete, Lesotho’s Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
