Mbabane – The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has launched a public competition to find a SiSwati name for the newly established National Disaster Risk Management Authority (NDRMA). The state-owned body, operating under the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, oversees disaster management at the national level.
The competition follows the passing of the Disaster Risk Management Act, 2025, in December, which mandates the Authority to build systems for national resilience. Its core objective is to “promote an integrated and coordinated system of disaster risk management that focuses on reducing vulnerability while strengthening preparedness and mitigation capacities across all sectors.”
NDMA is calling on all Emaswati to submit a strong, meaningful SiSwati name that reflects disaster risk management and resilience. The name should be easy to remember, inspire hope for communities affected by disasters, and symbolise the building of a resilient nation.
The prize for the winning entry is E5,000 cash. Participants are asked to submit proposals via email to communications@ndma.org.sz with the subject line: “National Disaster Risk Management Authority SiSwati Name.” Submissions must include the proposed name, a brief rationale explaining its meaning and relevance, and the participant’s full name and contact details.
Entries must be submitted by 12:00hrs on 04 February 2026. NDMA requests that names be preferably one word, though up to three words will be accepted. All entries must be original, in SiSwati, and clearly aligned with disaster risk management. Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of Eswatini, follow NDMA on social media, and may submit a maximum of two proposals. Employees of NDRMA and adjudication panel members are excluded.
“All submissions become the property of the NDRMA,” the agency said, adding that the judging panel’s decision is final. “Where the panel or adjudication committee decides to use a combination of two or more submissions, the prize shall be shared. The winner will be contacted directly using the details provided in their submission.”
