Piggs Peak Town Council leadership on Wednesday visited the Shiba family at Malandalahle after their home collapsed following prolonged heavy rains that have affected parts of the Kingdom in recent weeks. The visit was led by Mayor Ward 1 Cllr. Sipho Shongwe, CEO, Roison Daniel Pave, and members of management, who met the family at the site where the house gave way. The Council said the collapse was linked to a nearby donga whose impact was worsened by continuous rainfall.
According to the Council, the risk posed by the donga had been identified during earlier assessments. As a result, land was allocated last year to relocate the Shiba family to a safer area. While the relocation process was still underway, the recent rains accelerated the situation and led to the collapse of the structure.
In response, Piggs Peak Town Council, working with the National Disaster Management Agency and other stakeholders, moved to provide immediate assistance. The support includes temporary shelter, food parcels, clothing and other essential household items to meet the family’s basic needs.
The Council said it has now fast tracked the relocation of the Shiba family to the allocated plot and will continue to provide humanitarian support until the family is settled in permanent and secure housing. At the same time, a broader assessment is being carried out to identify other households in the area that may be at risk due to similar conditions, with plans to extend assistance where necessary.
