China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with his Somali counterpart Abdisalam Dhaay on Sunday, reiterating Beijing’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. The call came during Wang’s African tour, which includes Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Lesotho.

Wang condemned efforts by Somaliland to engage with Taiwan in seeking independence, describing such moves as contrary to Somalia’s national unity. He also invited Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to attend the second China-Arab States Summit and encouraged deeper cooperation under the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.

The Chinese ministry said Wang pledged support for Somalia’s rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council this month, reflecting shared commitments to international peace and security. Dhaay thanked China for its assistance in countering separatism and terrorism while promoting stability and development. He reaffirmed Somalia’s adherence to the one-China principle and welcomed continued collaboration across economic, security, and defense sectors.

The planned visit to Somalia was postponed due to a schedule change, according to the Chinese embassy, with both foreign ministries agreeing on the adjustment.
