Beitbridge – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees South Africa Multi Country Office has begun talks with border and local authorities at the Beitbridge border post as part of efforts to improve protection for displaced people and strengthen cooperation at one of southern Africa’s busiest crossings.
UNHCR representative Kavita Belani visited the Beitbridge border crossing in Musina on 2 January during her first official trip to the post since assuming her role. The border links South Africa and Zimbabwe and serves as a key transit point for migrants refugees and asylum seekers from the region including those moving through to neighbouring countries such as Eswatini.
During the visit Belani met Musina mayor Cde Mawela Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela where discussions focused on supporting displaced persons alongside host communities. The talks covered improving access to basic services and promoting peaceful coexistence between local residents and people on the move.
Belani also held a meeting with Border Management Authority commissioner Dr Nakampe Michael Masiapato to explore closer collaboration through a structured partnership between UNHCR and the BMA. She said the engagement was aimed at aligning border management processes with international protection standards.
The visit allowed UNHCR to observe border operations directly and assess safeguards in place for asylum seekers and forcibly displaced people seeking international protection. According to Belani the engagement was necessary to ensure that individuals in need of safety and assistance are identified and supported as they cross into South Africa.
