Mbabane police have opened an inquest into the death of a 47 year old man from Maputo whose body was discovered in the Maphalaleni area on January 2, 2026.
The man had been reported missing since December 30, 2025, before members of the local community came across his body at around 10.45am while searching the area.
Preliminary findings by police suggest that the deceased may have slipped and fallen from a water cliff in Maphalaleni, an area known for steep and wet terrain, particularly during the rainy season currently affecting parts of the Kingdom of Eswatini.
Police say investigations are still underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Early indications point to slippery ground conditions caused by persistent rainfall, which may have contributed to the fall.
The Royal Eswatini Police Service has acknowledged the role played by community members who assisted in the search that led to the recovery of the body, noting that cooperation between residents and law enforcement remains key in such situations.
Emaswati have been urged to take extra care when moving near water bodies, cliffs and other high risk areas, as saturated soil and wet surfaces continue to pose danger during the ongoing rainy period.
