Manchester City dropped valuable points in the Premier League title race after being held to a goalless draw by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on New Year’s Day, a result that leaves Pep Guardiola’s side four points behind leaders Arsenal after Matchweek 19.
The match, played on Thursday 1 January in Sunderland, saw the defending champions dominate possession but fail to break down a disciplined home side, ending City’s six match winning run in the league. For Sunderland, the draw extended their unbeaten home record since returning to the top flight and reinforced their reputation as one of the season’s most stubborn opponents.
City thought they had struck early when Bernardo Silva volleyed home in the sixth minute after Erling Haaland flicked on Rayan Cherki’s corner, but the goal was ruled out for offside. It was a warning Sunderland heeded as they regrouped quickly and matched City’s intensity.
At the other end, Brian Brobbey powered past Ruben Dias to meet a long ball from Nordi Mukiele, only to be denied by City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from a tight angle. Haaland later fired straight at Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs following a Phil Foden cutback, while Trai Hume headed over from a Granit Xhaka cross in first half stoppage time.
City pushed harder after the break, introducing Rodri at half time to add control in midfield. Savinho sent an effort over the bar before forcing Roefs into action, while Eliezer Mayenda tested Donnarumma with a sharp low shot in the 54th minute. Josko Gvardiol came closest for the visitors, seeing a close range header saved and later clipping the outside of the post with an improvised volley.
Sunderland’s resistance was defined by committed defending in the closing stages, with Mukiele bravely blocking Jeremy Doku’s close range effort and Lutsharel Geertruida denying Gvardiol late on. The Black Cats also created moments of their own, enough to keep City cautious until the final whistle.
The result keeps Manchester City in second place on the table, now four points adrift of Arsenal, while Sunderland remain seventh. It also marked the first time in nine years that City failed to score in a Premier League match played in January, despite recording their highest expected goals in a goalless league game since 2022.
After the match, Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris praised his side’s character and organisation against what he described as one of Europe’s strongest teams, pointing to their ability to defend aggressively while still creating chances. Guardiola, meanwhile, pointed to missed opportunities in the six yard box and credited Sunderland’s physicality and pressing, noting that City improved significantly after the interval but could not find the finish.
For City, the draw meant a missed opportunity to apply pressure on Arsenal, with attention now turning to Sunday’s home fixture against a Chelsea side without a permanent manager. For Sunderland, the point added to an impressive list of results against top teams and ensured their strong home form remains intact as they prepare for upcoming away matches in London.
