Chelsea have parted company with head coach Enzo Maresca after an 18 month spell at Stamford Bridge, a decision that comes with the club sitting fifth in the Premier League table during the 2025 26 season.
The London club confirmed the Italian coach’s departure this week, days after a 2 2 home draw against AFC Bournemouth, which proved to be his final match in charge. Chelsea’s recent form has raised concern, with just one win recorded in their last seven league outings, leaving the Blues closer to 15th place than to the top three.
In a statement, the club said Maresca leaves having delivered notable silverware, guiding Chelsea to the UEFA Conference League title with a 4 1 win over Real Betis in May 2025 and later lifting the FIFA Club World Cup after a 3 0 victory against Paris Saint Germain. The club said both parties agreed that a change on the touchline offered the best chance of keeping the season’s remaining targets on course, including qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Maresca was appointed in June 2024 after a successful spell at Leicester City, where he won the Championship in the 2023 24 campaign. His Chelsea tenure started strongly, with four wins from his first six Premier League matches. The team ended the 2024 25 season on a high, winning five of their final six league games to secure fourth place and a return to Europe’s top competition.
This season has been more demanding despite the arrival of new signings such as Joao Pedro, Estevao Willian, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato. Chelsea collected only two wins from their opening six league matches and managed a single Premier League victory in December, a 2 0 home success against Everton.
After 19 league games this season, Chelsea sit fifth with 30 points, recording eight wins, six draws and five defeats, scoring 32 goals and conceding 21. By comparison, Maresca’s league win percentage dropped from 52.6 percent last season to 42.1 percent this term.
Despite domestic struggles, Chelsea remain active in cup competitions and have reached the EFL Cup semi finals, where they are set to face Arsenal over two legs.
Chelsea’s next fixture is on Sunday 4 January, when they travel to Manchester City, a match that will now be overseen by interim arrangements as the club considers its next appointment.
