Harare – Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has begun his annual holiday, which will last until early February 2026.
Starting on December 23, the president announced he would spend his month-long leave within Zimbabwe. According to a statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet in Harare, Vice President Kembo Mohadi will serve as acting president until December 31, 2025. From January 1 to January 13, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga will take over the acting role, before Mohadi resumes duties until Mnangagwa’s return.
Mnangagwa, who came to power in 2017 following the removal of long-serving president Robert Mugabe, has faced criticism from opposition parties and human rights groups, but has also won two elections since assuming office. His government has pledged economic reforms and re-engagement with the international community.
Recently, the ruling Zanu-PF party endorsed a proposal to extend Mnangagwa’s term until 2030, citing the need for continuity in the country’s Vision 2030 development programs. The decision was made at the party’s national conference in October.
