GABORONE — The Republic of Botswana has officially launched the Greater Gaborone Traffic Management System, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to modernise urban transport and improve road safety.
The system, introduced under the Botswana Integrated Transport Project, integrates traffic lights, surveillance cameras, speed enforcement, and real-time monitoring into a single, centralised control centre. This smart infrastructure will enable more efficient traffic management and quicker responses to incidents across Greater Gaborone and nearby settlements.
President Duma Gideon Boko, who officiated the launch, explained that the system would help reduce congestion, prevent accidents, and shorten travel times for commuters. He noted that by leveraging data, Botswana is enhancing public safety and productivity, while also creating a smarter, more efficient urban environment.
Boko emphasised that as Gaborone and surrounding cities grow, the adoption of intelligent transport solutions is essential for building resilience and improving the quality of life for residents. The new system is seen as a step towards ensuring a sustainable and future-ready urban mobility framework for Botswana.
