Addis Ababa – Prime Ministers Narendra Modi of India and Abiy Ahmed Ali of Ethiopia met in Addis Ababa today for wide-ranging discussions, agreeing to elevate bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership. The talks explored ways to expand cooperation across trade and investment, innovation, technology, education, defence, health, food security, agriculture, renewable energy and digital public infrastructure. Both leaders also reflected on the long-standing historical and people-to-people ties linking the two nations and exchanged views on regional and global developments.
Several memorandums of understanding were signed during the visit, aimed at improving services, trade and public systems. These included cooperation in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations training, mutual administrative assistance in customs matters, and the establishment of a data centre at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Additional agreements announced were: debt restructuring for Ethiopia under the G20 Common Framework; doubling scholarships for Ethiopian scholars under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations programme; specialised short-term courses in artificial intelligence for Ethiopian students and professionals through India’s ITEC programme; and support to enhance maternal and neonatal healthcare capacity at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Addis Ababa.
