Mbabane – From the first pencil marks in a school notebook to expressive portraits that capture emotion and identity, Samkelo Kalua has grown into one of Eswatini’s most passionate young sketch artists. Inspired by the works of Art in Martin Sefako and Mzwandile Moletsane, as well as the stories he encounters through travel and meeting new people, Samkelo brings life, texture, and personality to every piece he creates. His latest portrait of music sensation BlaqMajor showcases not only his technical skill but also his ability to convey confidence, charisma, and human depth through art.

I was drawn to sketching because of the precision and detail it allows. Over the years, my style evolved from hyper-realism to a more expressive and fluid approach that focuses on the emotions and stories behind my subjects.

4. Why did you choose BlaqMajor as your subject?

I chose BlaqMajor because of his unique style and contributions to the music industry. I admire his confidence and creativity, and I wanted to capture that energy in my portrait.

5. What message were you trying to convey through the portrait?

With this piece, I aimed to portray BlaqMajor’s charisma and confidence. My goal was to reflect who he is not just as an artist, but as a person through his expressions and posture.

6. What is your creative process when working on a portrait?

I begin by researching the subject and gathering reference images. Then I sketch a rough outline before diving into details, focusing on expressions, textures, and overall likeness. For BlaqMajor’s portrait, giving attention to his signature style was especially important.

7. How long did the BlaqMajor portrait take to complete?

It took me about a week. One of the biggest challenges was accurately capturing his likeness while still maintaining my own artistic touch. This required patience and several revisions.
