Mbabane – Christmas came early for some Mbabane Government Hospital (MGH) patients as volunteers from the Taiwan Tzu Chi Foundation warmed the wards with gifts of comfort and compassion.
Cheerful voices and bright smiles filled the children’s and surgical wards when the foundation’s students and volunteers delivered 200 handmade “cushions of love” to patients.
The colourful cushions, stitched during the volunteers’ school holidays, were welcomed with gratitude by patients who described the gesture as “a blessing in a difficult time.”
Sharon, the Tzu Chi Foundation Director in Eswatini, said the annual outreach was rooted in the Christmas spirit of giving.
“We want to remind everyone that love has no boundaries,” she said. “Giving these cushions, sharing blessings and singing carols is our way of bringing warmth, comfort, and joy to those who need it most.”
The volunteers sang Christmas carols in the wards, drawing smiles from nurses, parents and young patients who clapped along to familiar festive tunes.
For the past two years, the Tzu Chi Foundation has produced and distributed over 6 000 patient and breastfeeding support cushions through hospitals and mobile medical outreach clinics across the country. The cushions are made from fabric offcuts donated by textile factories, and the foundation turned this waste into colourful gifts of comfort.
