Maseru – Authorities in Quthing, Lesotho, have urged Basotho returning from South Africa for the Christmas break to use the official Tele border crossing as the Tele River remains dangerously swollen from continuous rains.

Tele Police Station Commander Inspector Monaheng Moholaha issued the appeal after noting that the river is currently too full for safe passage. He said many travellers continue to risk their lives by attempting to cross at informal points, including Tele, Dilli Dili, Mathole and Sinxondo, mainly because they fear arrest for overstaying in South Africa or travelling without passports.

Inspector Moholaha assured citizens that no arrests will be made at the legal border during this period. He added that police officers from both Lesotho and South Africa have been stationed at Tele border to maintain safety, strengthen patrols and protect travellers and their property.

He further cautioned against boarding local boats known as likepe, saying those operating them have been associated with incidents of robbing travellers of their money and belongings.
