Cape Town – American grandmaster Hans Niemann seized an unusual victory in Cape Town after defeating compatriot Fabiano Caruana to claim the Diving Chess Cape Town 2025 title, marking the opening spectacle of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Finals.
The exhibition took place on Wednesday at the Silo Hotel’s rooftop pool, where a small chessboard was placed 110 centimetres beneath the water. Players submerged themselves to make each move, resurfacing only for air before their opponent immediately plunged in to respond. The format demanded both strategic sharpness and the stamina to hold one’s breath through critical calculations.
The tournament forms part of several side attractions scheduled around the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Finals, running in Cape Town from 8–11 December and featuring global stars, including five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen. The event drew attention from across the chess world, blending athletic exertion with the mind sport’s familiar intensity.
London-based inventor Etan Ilfeld first introduced the “Diving Chess” format in 2012 through the Mind Sports Olympiad. Since then, the discipline has grown to host annual world championships in London and national editions in countries such as Germany, Poland, Austria and the Netherlands. Reigning world champion Michal Mazurkiewicz attended the Cape Town exhibition to guide players through the hybrid format.
Niemann had shared his intention to secure an underwater title as part of his Freestyle campaign, and his win set the tone for a competitive week ahead.
Eight elite players will contest the main Freestyle Chess Finals: Niemann, Carlsen, Caruana, Levon Aronian, World Cup winner Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan, Germany’s Vincent Keymer, India’s Arjun Erigaisi and Iran’s Parham Maghsoodloo.
