Maputo – South Africa and Mozambique have committed to a new phase of cooperation following the conclusion of the fourth session of the South Africa and Mozambique Bi National Commission held on Wednesday in Maputo. President Cyril Ramaphosa and President Daniel Chapo briefed the media after the meeting, outlining areas where both governments plan to deepen collaboration.

The talks brought together senior officials, technical teams and ministers who reviewed progress since the previous session held in Pretoria in 2022. According to President Ramaphosa, the assessment showed clear opportunities to speed up joint programmes that support economic growth, trade and regional stability.

Several new Memoranda of Understanding were signed during the session. These agreements form the basis for expanded cooperation in energy, mining, infrastructure development, agriculture, tourism, telecommunications, health and financial services. The South African leader said the two governments want to ensure that decisions taken at the commission are implemented and that investment opportunities are opened for businesses in both countries.

President Ramaphosa noted that South African companies operating across the continent had reiterated their commitment to supporting Africa’s development during engagements at the recent G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg. He said the commission remains an important tool for advancing that continental agenda.

Security also featured prominently in the talks, with both governments agreeing that stronger border management and defence cooperation are essential for long term stability and economic progress. The two leaders were expected to travel to Inhambane Province later in the afternoon to launch a major Sasol gas processing facility, which is being promoted as an example of how public and private sector partnerships can drive regional development.

President Chapo described President Ramaphosa’s visit as a meaningful moment for Mozambique, noting that the relationship between the two countries is rooted in a shared history and a long standing struggle for freedom. He said the partnership now reflects a common commitment to development and prosperity.

President Ramaphosa thanked the Mozambican government for its hospitality and said the next session of the Bi National Commission will be hosted in South Africa, where both countries hope to report progress made under the new agreements.
