Pretoria – One of the alleged South African big five crime syndicate member, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, has told Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee at Kgosi Mampuru Prison that his grandmother on his mother’s side is a Dlamini.
Giving his testimony before the committee that was set up to investigate serious allegations of corruption, criminal infiltration, and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system, Matlala explained that he has been using his mother’s surname, Matlala, instead, throughout his life.
The disputed ID is at the centre of a widening ministry of Home Affairs scandal, in which Assistant Civil Registar Nonhlanhla Dlamini is facing charges for allegedly issuing the document improperly.
Matlala told Members of Parliament that he has never used the surname Dlamini and insisted that he holds no Eswatini citizenship, no local ID, and no passport under that name. He stated that the only Dlamini connection he is aware of is through his maternal grandmother.
“I have always been a Matlala,” he told the committee.
The revelation that Matlala is a Dlamini was made by Times of Eswatini in July where it was reported that Matlala holds an Eswatini National Identity under the name Vusimuzi Dlamini.
According to the report, he is registered as a resident of Mothsane and is listed as the second-born child of a woman named Christinah Thembi Shongwe, described as a housewife from the area. Shongwe, however, has denied any connection with Matlala, stating that her second child is a girl and that she has never met him.
