Pretoria – Controversial South African businessman and alleged crime boss, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, gave his testimony earlier this morning before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, revealing that he is a married man with nine children, and that is where his nickname “Cat” comes from.
Matlala answered questions regarding his alleged involvement in interference within the criminal justice system. He had been implicated in July this year when the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner accused him of having relationships with senior police officials and influencing the disbandment of the Political Task Team.
During his testimony, Matlala provided a brief overview of his childhood and adult life. He said he was born and raised in Mamelodi East, Pretoria, and attended Letlhabile Secondary School. He also noted that he registered his first official business, a security company, in 2017, which serviced clients from construction sites and schools.
He mentioned that he had been sentenced to four years in 2001 for possession of stolen property, but the sentence was later converted to correctional supervision. Matlala also told the committee that he was raised by a single mother.
Earlier in the proceedings, uMkhonto Wesizwe had requested that Matlala’s testimony be continued on Thursday or Friday because his statements were not signed, a request that was opposed by the EFF, the DA, and ActionSA.
Matlala took an oath and vowed to be honest and transparent. The proceedings took place at Kgosi Mampuru Prison, where he is detained for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend Tebogo Thobejane.
