Mbabane – The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued a safety alert after Maguga Dam became full and began spilling at around 12:30 pm today. This spillage prompted NDMA to issue precautionary warnings for communities living downstream of the Komati River.
According to the NDMA, technical teams are monitoring the dam and river flow, and confirmed spill volumes will be released once assessments are finalised. The agency cautioned that water levels may rise rapidly, increasing the risk of flooding in surrounding areas.
Residents downstream have been urged to avoid flooded bridges, riverbanks and submerged footpaths. The NDMA further advised parents to keep children away from fast-moving water and encouraged livestock owners to move animals to safe locations. Fishermen and regular river users were instructed to stay away from the water until conditions improve.
The government disaster management agency said it will continue tracking the situation and will update the public through official communication channels.
