Mbabane – Following an accident caused by a stray cow, an 85-year-old man from Majotini appeared in court charged with contravening Section 77 (1) as read with Section 122 (4) of the Road Traffic Act 6 of 2007.
Petros Kunene faced the charge after the incident occurred on November 2, 2025 at around Majotini.
Him being the registered owner of a cow, he was accused of wrongfully and unlawfully allowing the animal to stray onto the MR1 public road. The cow was hit by a MAN bus, which was driven by Mdluli Mkhathazi, a 38-year-old man from Matsamo. The bus was damaged on the front bumper and the right headlamp.
In mitigation, Kunene told the court that he was not at home on the day when the cow strayed.
Kunene pleaded for leniency. He told the court that he is old and sometimes struggles to look after his cattle because of knee injury. He added that he is sometimes assisted by his grandchildren to look after the cattle.
The presiding magistrate advised him to hire help to look after his cattle, stating that he may continue appearing in court if the problem persists.
Kunene was sentenced to pay a fine of E2,000 with an option of serving 12 months in prison.
The sentence was suspended for three years on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence during the suspension period.
