Johannesburg – South Africa’s Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, met with Zimbabwe’s First Vice-President, Dr. Constantino Chiwenga, on Friday at the Catalyst Hotel in Sandton. The meeting took place in preparation for the Group of 20 (G20) Leaders’ Summit, which will be held from Saturday, 22 November 2025, at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
The discussion focused on enhancing the strong and historic relationship between South Africa and Zimbabwe, which dates back to their shared struggle against apartheid and colonialism. Zimbabwe remains a key trading partner for South Africa within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
Trade figures show that in 2024, South Africa exported goods worth R69.21 billion to Zimbabwe, up from R57.5 billion the previous year. Imports from Zimbabwe also saw an increase, reaching R5.4 billion in 2024, compared to R4.4 billion in 2023.
Furthermore, South Africa is one of the largest investors in Zimbabwe, with over 120 South African companies operating across various industries, including mining, aviation, and retail.
Deputy President Mashatile described the meeting as crucial for deepening trade and investment ties, while also advancing the strategic role of SADC in the region.
