Pigg’s Peak – Pigg’s Peak authorities have reported the death of an illegal gold miner at the Old Pigg’s Peak Mine, marking the second fatal incident at the site in just 10 days. The deceased, identified as Sandile Khanyile from Motshane, died after being struck on the head by a falling log inside shaft four.
Reports indicate Khanyile was underground with a group of illegal miners when the accident happened. Witnesses say his companions fled the shaft immediately after the log fell, leaving him behind. Some later attempted to raise the alarm and retrieve him, while others returned home. Police were notified and arrived around 9 am yesterday, finding that the body had already been removed from the shaft.
Assistant Superintendent Nosipho Mnguni, Acting Chief Information and Communications Officer, confirmed the incident and urged the public to avoid entering abandoned mine shafts or taking part in illegal mining, describing such activities as extremely dangerous. She added that illegal mining remains a criminal offense with serious penalties, including prosecution and imprisonment.
