Johannesburg – General Dumisani Khumalo has been reinstated as head of South Africa’s Crime Intelligence unit, multiple reports say, months after his arrest over alleged corruption within the department.
Khumalo and six other senior officials were arrested in late June for allegedly appointing a civilian without the required policing experience. The group included the Crime Intelligence CFO, the head of vetting, the head of Gauteng Crime Intelligence, and three other officers. All appeared in Pretoria Regional Court in August alongside the civilian facing fraud and corruption charges.
News24 and EWN report that Khumalo has returned to work but remains barred from Crime Intelligence offices as part of his bail conditions. He previously said an internal SAPS investigation had cleared him of wrongdoing, allowing him to “return to work and fulfil his duties.”
The reinstatement comes as testimony continues at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate the alleged capture of South Africa’s criminal justice system. General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi claimed Khumalo’s arrest aimed to disrupt investigations into criminal syndicates in Gauteng.
Khumbalo, who led the now-disbanded Political Killings Task Team, supported these allegations. He presented WhatsApp logs from murder-accused tenderpreneur Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala, showing alleged collusion between cartel members and senior police officials. He said he could not reveal more evidence publicly, as it would compromise intelligence sources and ongoing investigations.
