Abuja – Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has delayed his planned trip to the G20 summit in Johannesburg and an African Union-European Union meeting in Angola due to growing security concerns in his home country. The decision comes in the wake of a series of attacks, including the abduction of schoolgirls, the killing of a military general, and the kidnapping of churchgoers, which have rocked northern Nigeria.
Tinubu, who was set to depart Abuja on Wednesday, suspended his trip after security briefings revealed the severity of the situation. The abduction of dozens of schoolgirls in Kebbi state and the assault on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara state, have prompted a reevaluation of security priorities.
The president has ordered additional security forces to be deployed in Eruku and the wider Ekiti Local Government Area. A crackdown on the bandits responsible for these attacks is also underway. In a statement from the presidency, it was revealed that Vice President Kashim Shettima had been sent to Kebbi state to gather on-the-ground information, while local authorities and security agencies have been tasked with rescuing the 24 schoolgirls still held captive.
