Pretoria – Oupa Brown Mogotsi, a self-identified undercover operative, has criticised KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s media briefing on 6 July, calling it a “knee-jerk” reaction to the supposed disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). Mogotsi suggested the real motive behind the briefing was Mkhwanazi’s anger over the arrests of Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo and others, rather than concerns over the task team’s dissolution.
Mkhwanazi’s claims centred on the disbandment, which he linked to rogue elements within the police and judicial systems, but Mogotsi argued the PKTT had continued operating despite a letter from Police Minister Senzo Mchunu in December 2024.
Mogotsi revealed he first saw the leaked letter in early January and used the information to create an impression of inside knowledge with controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. He sought to gain Matlala’s trust after the PKTT had raided his home in December 2024, assaulting his wife during the operation. Mogotsi said Matlala was interested in the disbandment, believing it might signal the end of PKTT harassment.
Despite Mkhwanazi’s claims that Mogotsi had accessed confidential police data, the former agent denied this, asserting he was a registered co-agent within Crime Intelligence. Mogotsi admitted to exaggerating his relationship with Minister Mchunu and even fabricated a story of accompanying him to Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape after a mass shooting.
Mogotsi also dismissed the existence of a “Big Five” cartel, calling it a tactic of misdirection. He insisted that Matlala and businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe would have been arrested regardless of the PKTT’s status.
