Mbabane – Travellers using cross-border public transport will face higher costs from 1 December after the Eswatini Interstate Transport Association announced an average E20 increase in interstate bus fares.
In a notice issued on 10 November, EITA said the fare adjustment was necessary due to rising petrol and diesel prices and higher vehicle maintenance costs. The last increase in cross-border fares was in March 2024.
EITA formally confirmed the new fare of E350 for the Manzini–Johannesburg route on 27 November 2024. Association chairman Njabulo Mabuza said the increase is driven by continuous fuel price hikes, rising operational expenses, and recently approved government levies affecting the transport sector.
Travellers on the Manzini–Johannesburg route will see fares rise from E350 to E370. Other routes will also be affected: Manzini–Durban will increase from E370 to E390, Manzini–Nelspruit from E220 to E240, and Manzini–Naas from E200 to E220. The Johannesburg–Oshoek fare will be set at E290, while the Ermelo route rises to E260.
Mabuza said the adjustments aim to keep services sustainable amid ongoing cost pressures for operators.
