Mbabane: Could it be that David Simelane, the serial killer who was convicted in 2011 for slaying 43 women and children is now a pastor?
Through His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) Public Relations Officer, Gugulethu Dlamini, the Independent News has learnt that the most notorious killer in the history of the country preaches the hell out of both fellow inmates and warders.
Dlamini said over the few years that Simelane has been in jail he has showed true signs of repentance and speaks of nothing but God. Simelane killed 43 women and children and abandoned them in forests in various parts of the country, especially in Macetjeni and Malkerns. Some of the women were buried in shallow graves.According to the serial killer the motive of his deeds was due to a false rape accusation which landed him in jail, and his actions were nothing but vengeance. Simelane was sentenced by Judge Jacobus Annandale to die by hanging.
The prisons’ spokesperson said Simelane’s eloquence has seen many, including the warders, coming close to giving up their sinful ways and choosing righteousness.Dlamini added that the 56 year old seemed well in prison and spoke less about his previous evil deeds. “He abides by prison regulation as well as the recently government set Covid-19 regulations like wearing a mask,” said the spokesperson. She reminded that most of the times Simelane is alone in his cell and needs not wear a mask but when he is to engage the officers he does. In fact, he does not take the pandemic lightly and in addition to donning the mask he maintains social distancing when talking to the warders, said the spokesperson. She added that he washes and sanitizes his hands as set out by the Covid-19 rules without supervision.
The spokesperson said the fate of Simelane rests with His Majesty the King Mswati III who would commute his sentence through the world acclaimed Amnesty Prerogative Initiative. She said in fact, the Correctional Services has collaborated with the justice system and all they await is His Majesty’s blessing.
