Johannesburg – Reports suggest Argentine President Javier Milei could skip the G20 Summit scheduled for next weekend in Johannesburg, South Africa, though organisers say no official confirmation has been received.
The summit, which brings together leaders of the world’s largest economies, has already seen the withdrawal of all United States delegates, including President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Sources close to Milei’s G20 planning team told Argentine publication Perfil that Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and G20 representative Federico Pinedo would attend on his behalf.
Milei, who has led Argentina for nearly two years, is known for his confrontational style and major government cuts, including 48 000 public sector jobs and the merger of 11 ministries. His party recently won 41 percent of the vote in October’s midterm elections, finishing about 10 percent ahead of its nearest rival.
The Argentine leader recently attended the Conservative Political Action Campaign at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he expressed admiration for the former US president. Argentina also secured a $20 billion currency swap deal during his visit.
South African authorities and summit organisers have yet to receive formal confirmation from Buenos Aires about Milei’s attendance, leaving the final list of world leaders for the summit uncertain.
