Mbabane – Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Thulisisle Dladla and her delegation have returned from representing His Majesty King Mswati III at the second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2) in Doha.
The Doha Political Declaration, which was reached by consensus through intergovernmental talks at the United Nations in New York on September 5, 2025, was adopted at the conference, which took place in Qatar from November 4-6 with the subject “It’s Time to Deliver Solutions.”
In addition to updating international commitments made under the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development (1995) and bringing them into line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Declaration was formally renewed.
The goal of the WSSD2 was to ensure a coordinated government approach to advancing social development priorities at the national and global levels, with an agenda that included poverty eradication, employment, education, health, gender equality, the environment, and inclusion, requiring contributions from various sectors.
The summit objectives were:
- Assess progress toward the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and related global frameworks.
- Evaluate national and international efforts in poverty eradication, employment creation, and social inclusion.
- Align global priorities with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs), ensuring the implementation of commitments.
- Encourage the exchange of knowledge.
The DPM’s delegation comprised the Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture, Bongani Nzima; the Ambassador to the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Eswatini to the United Nations in New York, Thamie Dlamini; the Eswatini National Youth Council CEO, Lwazi Mamba; and senior government officials from the DPMO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Affairs, the Ministry of Information Communication and Technology, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Education and Training.
