Mbabane – DJ and dancer, Gifted Kosie, a rising sensation, has ventured outside of the continent and is scheduled to play at India’s Shisa Nyama Festival this Saturday.
Yesterday, the vibrant DJ departed Eswatini. Her first trip outside of Africa is to India, and she was aware of the difficulties that lay ahead. It comes after she recently performed in Uganda, where she worked with local musicians and appeared in a live interview with DJ VX Faisal on NRG 106.5 FM Uganda.
“I think firstly it’s adapting to a new crowd, a new culture, and a new tradition of that particular country, which is India. But I have faith. I have a good team behind me; we communicate every second, and if I encounter problems, they respond immediately,” she said.
Kosie explained that her passion for music and dance was ignited early in life.
“I fell in love with music at a young age. My father is a sound engineer at one of the country’s media houses, so he used to play a lot of music at home using vinyl records. We would watch him switching from one vinyl to another,” she shared.
According to Kosie, her school years further nurtured her love for performance.
“In primary school, I joined the drummies team and danced a lot there. By high school, I was a leader, and I also taught drummies at other schools.”
Breaking into the male-dominated music industry has not been easy, but Gifted Kosie has held her ground with grace and determination.
“You know, as a female, it is really hard to break into this industry,” she said.
She added that preparation for each event is tailored to the audience and setting.
“We look at the event we are booked for, and then we start preparing accordingly,” she explained.
Her performances alternate between deejaying and dancing depending on the season.
“Sometimes I get more dance shows, sometimes it’s more DJ shows.”
