Umafikizolo’s hit single Uyoncengwa Unyoko has been nominated for Best Maskandi Album at this year’s South African Music Awards (SAMAs).
The single by 24-year-old artist Khethukuthula Mhlongo, from Mnambithi, KwaZulu-Natal, dominated music scenes and has been going viral on social media while amassing millions of streams to earn the newcomer the category nomination.
On Spotify, the song has amassed over 14 million streams, while on YouTube, it has reached 18 million views since its release just three months ago.
Uyoncengwa Unyoko was released in July.
The Maskandi star’s song has not only dominated streaming platforms but also climbed the radio charts, with fans praising its blend of traditional Zulu storytelling and modern sounds.
Maskandi music, believed to have originated in the early to mid-20th century among Zulu migrant workers in KwaZulu-Natal, has evolved with each generation and remains one of the most influential music genres in South Africa.
According to Spotify, “Nearly half of Maskandi’s listeners are under 35, and many are gravitating toward our Bhinca Nation playlist, which is the destination for the genre’s hottest hits.”
Not so long ago Umafikizolo graced Eswatini with his electrifying performance, spinning patrons’ heads with his music. He further revealed that he is interested in collaborating with local artists on the Maskandi line.
