Mbabane – After an audio recording surfanced in which he made offensive and menacing comments against Prime Minister (PM) Russell Mmiso Dlamini, government spokesperson Alpheus Nxumalo has publicly apologised.
The leaked conversation, reportedly between Nxumalo and Swaziland News editor Zweli Dlamini, has gone viral on social media platforms. In the recording, Nxumalo is heard issuing threats and using language deemed highly derogatory towards the PM. Due to the offensive nature of his comments, they cannot be repeated publicly.
Speaking to the media, Nxumalo confirmed that he was aware of the audio clip, acknowledging that the conversation did indeed take place. He claimed, however, that it was a private discussion that had been recorded and published without his consent.
Despite this claim, parts of the leaked recording suggest that when Dlamini asked if he should publish Nxumalo’s statements, particularly those relating to his rape case, Nxumalo responded by saying he could “go ahead and publish.” His remarks have been described as distasteful and mocking towards his alleged victims.
In his statement, Nxumalo extended an unreserved apology to His Majesty King Mswati III, Her Majesty the Indlovukazi, and the PM for his remarks, admitting that his conduct was unbecoming of a senior government official.
“As a government spokesperson, I am expected to work with the PM in a spirit of respect and cooperation,” Nxumalo said.
“I acknowledge that it was wrong to express my grievances outside official channels and in a manner that was disrespectful. I am deeply remorseful and will do better going forward.”
