Mbabane – The late commissioner of cooperative development, Russell Nxumalo, will be laid to rest Saturday, his family has made the announcements.
Nxumalo passed away on Sunday at the age of 43 after a short illness. According to a statement released by his family, a memorial service will be held at Mbabane Alliance Church on Friday at noon.
“A funeral service will take place at Mgobotsi in the Hhohho region on Saturday November 1, starting at 5 am. There will be no night vigil,” the family is quoted by Eswatini Observer as having said.
Nxumalo, before being appointed commissioner in February last year, has served as national civil registrar where he helped strengthen Eswatini’s civil registration systems.
As commissioner of co-operative development, Nxumalo played a key role in growing Eswatini’s co-operative sector. He promoted community-based projects that supported economic empowerment and helped establish Eswatini’s first co-operative bank, giving more small businesses access to financial services.
National Co-operatives Federation of Eswatini President Maxwell Simelane said they were deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Nxumalo who had done a remarkable job in the sector. He said Nxumalo would be remembered for his hard work and ambition.
“He made a much-needed difference in the sector. It will not be easy to find his replacement. Our heartfelt condolences go to the Nxumalo family; may they find comfort during this difficult time,” he said.
Nxumalo’s visionary yet practical leadership earned him great respect in both government and community circles. He will be remembered for his commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive economy for Eswatini.
