Maseru – Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini, representing His Majesty King Mswati III, congratulated His Majesty King Letsie III of the Kingdom of Lesotho on receiving the Presidential Global Water-maker Award. The ceremony took place in Maseru, Lesotho, during a national celebration marking the king’s recognition.
King Letsie III was honoured during the African Union-AIP Africa Water Investment Summit in August for his leadership in advancing the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, a major initiative contributing to water security across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Speaking at the event, PM Dlamini said the award reflects “visionary leadership in advancing water security and regional cooperation through the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.” He noted that uneven water distribution affects the continent, with more than half of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa lacking access to safe drinking water, and only 63 percent of SADC residents having potable water.
The Prime Minister described the Lesotho Highlands Water Project as a “beacon of excellence and a model of effective collaboration across borders” that ensures sustainable water management while supporting socio-economic development, regional cooperation, and environmental protection in line with Agenda 2063 of the African Union.
He added that the project’s integrated approach to water development, environmental care, and community upliftment provides lessons for Eswatini and other SADC member states. PM Dlamini also expressed hope for continued cooperation between Eswatini, Lesotho, and regional partners to advance water investments for the benefit of current and future generations.
The celebration coincided with the 39th anniversary of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project Treaty. The multi-phase initiative is Africa’s largest water transfer scheme, supplying water to South Africa while generating hydro-electric power for Lesotho.
