Mbabane – His Majesty King Mswati III witnessed thrilling theatrics during the second Fire Day celebrations of the Eswatini Fire and Emergency Service.
The event featured several demonstrations showcasing the firefighters’ bravery and technical expertise in handling emergencies. Among the displays was a snake-handling demonstration where officers showed how they manage snakes in real-life situations before transferring them to reptile centers or game reserves. A brown house snake and a black mamba were used to demonstrate the proper handling techniques.
Another highlight of the day was the firefighting demonstration, where the team exhibited how they extinguish fires using a 600-litre and a 7,000-litre water tanker, as well as an ambulance. The scenario involved a Handigas cylinder that had exploded. Firefighters first cooled the cylinder with foam water before putting out the flames completely. An ambulance on standby provided first aid and transported those at the scene to hospital.
A dramatic rescue mission was also showcased on a five-storey building that had caught fire, with someone trapped inside. Firefighters demonstrated how they rescue such individuals by swiftly climbing ladders and using special ropes to ascend the building. The trapped person was successfully rescued.
The final act featured the extinguishing of a burning aircraft. Firefighters first released foam water to cool it down, followed by water to completely put out the flames. According to the day’s commentator, this exercise must be completed quickly to ensure that the area is safe for another plane to land.
