Francistown – President Duma Gideon Boko joined hundreds of Francistown residents and members of the Botswana Police Service on Saturday for the “Run for a Safer Botswana” campaign, a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting fitness, unity, and stronger partnerships between citizens and law enforcement.
The 5km run, held under the theme “Say No to Gender-Based Violence,” brought together families, youth groups, and community leaders. Police Commissioner Dinah Marathe and several senior government officials also participated.
President Boko praised the police for becoming more community-oriented and approachable, saying, “Gone are the days when people feared the police, today, they are our partners and protectors.” Drawing on his legal background, he warned that many violent crimes stem from unresolved conflict and misuse of words, urging couples to engage in peaceful dialogue and compassion to prevent gender-based violence.
He also addressed challenges in marriages, encouraging clarity and sincerity in unions, and spoke on the dangers of drug and substance abuse, calling for support and understanding for those struggling with addiction.
The event concluded with performances from police and prison bands, local artists, and fitness activities, marking a day of unity, health, and hope for safer communities.
