Beira – Seven people are missing after a crew transfer boat capsized near the Port of Beira in Mozambique on Thursday while ferrying personnel to an oil and chemical tanker managed by Scorpio Marine.
The incident occurred off Beira’s outer anchorage as the small service vessel approached the Sea Quest, a Marshall Islands-flagged tanker built in 2012. According to reports, the boat was carrying 21 people, including five signing crewmembers for the tanker.
Fourteen of those onboard were rescued by the Sea Quest crew and other nearby vessels that responded to the distress call. Three of the survivors were treated aboard the tanker for injuries sustained during the accident.
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mozambique has launched a search operation to locate the seven missing individuals, with assistance from local authorities and vessels in the vicinity.
Scorpio Marine Management confirmed that it is in contact with the families of the missing sailors and is working with Mozambican officials to support ongoing rescue efforts and investigations into the cause of the capsize.
