Soweto, South Africa – Tshepang Moremi and Yanela Mbuthuma each scored twice as Orlando Pirates defeated Lioli FC 4-0 on Saturday at Orlando Stadium, securing progression to the next round of the CAF Champions League with a 7-0 aggregate win.
The Soweto side arrived at the second-leg clash with a 3-0 advantage from last weekend’s first leg in Lesotho, where Tshegofatso Mabasa scored twice and Oswin Appollis added a late goal.
The match started cautiously, with both sides attempting to gauge each other’s strategy. Pirates launched a counterattack in the 23rd minute when Nkosikhona Ndaba found Sipho Mbule, but the midfielder’s shot went wide.
The deadlock was broken in first-half stoppage time when Moremi netted to give Pirates a 1-0 lead at the interval.
The second half saw Pirates dominate from the restart. Moremi doubled his tally in the 47th minute, completing his brace and extending the lead. Pirates continued to pressure the Lesotho champions, who struggled to maintain possession or penetrate a solid Pirates defence.
Mbuthuma added further gloss to the scoreline, scoring two goals in quick succession in the 78th and 80th minutes. His brace sealed the comprehensive victory for Pirates, sending them confidently into the next phase of the Champions League.
Orlando Pirates now await their second preliminary round opponents, carrying a 7-0 aggregate advantage from their tie against Lioli.
