MBABANE – Tata Motors has launched the Curvv, a coupe-styled crossover SUV, as part of its return to the local market. The vehicle was first showcased at the Festival of Motoring in Kyalami last month, and local media recently had the chance to test drive it.
The Curvv is designed to stand out with a swooping silhouette, full-width LED rear light bar, flush door handles, and 208mm ground clearance. It slots between Tata’s smaller Punch compact SUV and the larger Harrier mid-size SUV, measuring 4 308mm in length with a 500-litre boot.
Three derivatives are available, all powered by a three-cylinder 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 88kW and 170Nm, driving the front wheels through either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic. The base Pure model starts at E349 900 and features LED daytime running lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, electric tailgate, a four-inch digital instrument cluster, and a seven-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Creative model adds 17-inch alloys, a 10.25-inch infotainment display with wireless connectivity, push-button start, keyless entry, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and paddle shifters. The flagship Accomplished S comes only with the automatic gearbox and includes leatherette upholstery, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, 360-degree camera, voice-activated panoramic sunroof, JBL sound system, mood lighting, and ventilated front seats.
During the test drive around Lanseria, the Curvv delivered a solid, comfortable ride, with smooth gear changes from the dual-clutch automatic. Tata claims fuel consumption of 5.7 litres per 100km.
Pricing for the range starts at E349 900 for the Pure, R419 900 for the Creative DCA, and E519 900 for the Accomplished S DCA, all backed by a five-year/125 000km warranty and a three-year/45 000km service plan. The Curvv faces competition in the E350 000 to E520 000 segment from Chinese brands offering larger engines and extensive aftersales support, making its design appeal crucial to attracting buyers.
