Durban – Golden Arrows caused an upset in the Betway Premiership by defeating defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Wednesday afternoon.
The result marks Sundowns’ first loss of the 2025/26 season, keeping them on 18 points, just behind league leaders Sekhukhune United, who have two games in hand.
Sundowns made two changes from their weekend victory over Durban City FC. Jayden Adams replaced SA Under-20 international Kutlwano Letlhaku, who is with Amajita at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, while Peter Shalulile started as striker instead of joint-top scorer Iqraam Rayners. New signings Katlego Ntsabeleng and Nuno Santos were on the bench.
Arrows’ Siyanda Ndlovu and Junior Dion caused problems down Sundowns’ left flank in the first half. Dion narrowly missed scoring in the 25th minute but made no mistake five minutes later, converting from a corner after Sundowns’ defence faltered.
Sundowns struggled to create chances, registering only one shot on target in the opening 45 minutes. They introduced Santos early in the second half for Adams, seeking to turn the game around. Despite a stronger performance after the break, Sundowns could not find an equaliser.
The victory lifted Golden Arrows to ninth on the log with 10 points from eight matches.
