Soweto – Kaizer Chiefs played to a 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants in Wednesday’s Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium, with Khanyisa Mayo netting on his debut while Jaisen Clifford scored for the visitors.
The result moved Chiefs to 14 points from seven matches, while Bloemfontein-based Gallants now have 10 points from eight games. Chiefs returned to league action after a tough start to their CAF Confederation Cup campaign, losing 1-0 to Kabuscorp in Angola. Prior to that, they suffered a 3-1 defeat against log-leaders Sekhukhune United.
A day after the loss to Babina Noko, Chiefs parted ways with head coach Nasreddine Nabi amid reports of a strained relationship. Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, former assistants, were appointed to lead the club on an interim basis.
Chiefs started strongly against Gallants, creating multiple scoring opportunities. Mayo opened the scoring in the 39th minute, marking an immediate impact since joining on a season-long loan from CR Belouizdad. Moments later, Chiefs missed a chance to double their lead after Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi saved a penalty from Gaston Sirino.
Early in the second half, Sirino had another chance from a Mayo assist but missed the target. Gallants equalised in the 75th minute through substitute Jaisen Clifford, securing a share of the spoils as the match ended 1-1.
