Bloemfontein, South Africa – Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants in a lively Betway Premiership encounter at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium on Wednesday night.
The reigning champions took the lead in the 28th minute when Iqraam Rayners headed in Marcelo Allende’s cross. But the advantage lasted only seven minutes, as Keanu Cupido’s attempted clearance turned into an own goal after goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had parried a shot from Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo.
Namibian striker Peter Shalulile, restored to the starting line-up, threatened early when his fourth-minute effort was saved by Washington Arubi. Gallants nearly stunned the visitors soon after when Daniel Msendami beat the offside trap but curled his shot just wide with Williams stranded.
Unhappy with his side’s first-half display, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso made changes at the break, introducing Aubrey Modiba and Tashreeq Matthews. More substitutions followed, including the return of Khuliso Mudau from injury, but the champions could not break down a disciplined Gallants defence.
The result leaves Sundowns in second place on the table, two points behind leaders Sekhukhune United, who defeated Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 on Tuesday night.
