Johannesburg – President Cyril Ramaphosa told ANC councillors at the FNB Stadium in Soweto that municipalities run by the Democratic Alliance often outperform ANC-led councils in service delivery.
Ramaphosa said party members should study how municipalities such as Cape Town and Stellenbosch operate and adopt their approaches to improve local governance. “We need to ask ourselves what it is that they are doing better than we are doing,” he said. He added that the country cannot remain at the bottom in municipal performance and warned that some ANC councils are moving backwards.
The President also raised concerns over financial management in ANC-led municipalities, noting that the Auditor General reported some councils’ financial statements were prepared outside council structures. Ramaphosa called for capable personnel with accounting and management expertise to be deployed in local government.
ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe addressed councillors, urging them to focus on council management rather than ceremonial activities. “I know we have a lot of singing councillors but we have no councils. You all sing well but capacity dololo,” he told the crowd.
